National Volunteer Week is coming up! This nationally celebrated event will take place from April 10-16 and is centered around recognizing individuals and organizations who have served the public, ultimately encouraging others to engage in service projects around the community. It is spearheaded by an organization called Points of Light, which is an international, nonprofit organization dedicated to volunteer service that encourages individuals to solve community issues through voluntary service.

A National Volunteer Week proclamation has been issued by the American President each year since the holiday’s inception, and the first president to initiate this tradition was Ronald Reagan in 1974. Two years ago, President Obama issued a presidential proclamation regarding National Volunteer Week where he announced, “I call upon all Americans to observe this week by volunteering in service projects across our country and pledging to make service a part of their daily lives.” The President’s Volunteer Service Award is awarded each year in the U.S., during National Volunteer Week, from different organizations to their members who have completed 500+ hours of volunteer service!

This year, the Richter Center Ambassadors are implementing Fresno State’s first celebration of National Volunteer Week through several events scheduled for April 11 – 14, 2016.  Each day, our team will host a table in the free speech area to celebrate and recognize Fresno State students, staff, and faculty who are engaged in extraordinary service throughout the community.
