“We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean, but the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.” -Mother Teresa

This quote has always stuck out at me in regards to service. Many people believe that their service goes unnoticed. They believe that they really can’t make a difference. It is true: somebody can’t do everything, but everybody can do something. With the combined efforts of all volunteers, change begins to emerge. Volunteering is never a wasted effort. If more people were to volunteer, the impact on our city, nation, and world would increase. Teamwork is what leads us to greater change and a better community. By working together, change can happen, and quickly! Get involved in your community and see the impact that it has. Encourage friends and family to participate with you!

Great quote and a great post. I was able to witness the impact an individual can make first-hand this weekend during Make A Difference Day. There were 35 students who helped cut a new hiking trail in the Sierra foothills. It was very hard work and almost none of the students who participated had ever done anything like this. After nearly 5 hours, when we finished, everyone was tired, bordering on exhaustion. Every single volunteer, through their sweat and hard work, helped contribute in very meaningful ways. Each turn of a shovel, scrape of a rake, cut of a pair of pruning shears, or swing of a pick resulted in that trail getting completed. I don’t think a single student there felt that their efforts were unimportant in completing the trail. If they did, they’d be mistaken!
